Three graduate research agronomist positions are on offer in regional Victoria as part of a partnership between the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).
Anyone interested in applying for one of the new positions is encouraged to do so now as applications close on August 1.
The successful applicants will for 18 months be located in the State’s North West (Bendigo-Birchip-Swan Hill), South West (Hamilton-Inverleigh/Geelong-Tatyoon) and Western Victoria (Horsham-Birchip).
Each of the graduate research agronomists will work with and support local grower groups, agronomic advisers and/or resellers and DEDJTR and will be involved in agronomy trials and dissemination of research outputs directly to grain growers.
GRDC Southern Manager Grower Services, Craig Ruchs, says the joint DEDJTR-GRDC program aims to accelerate the development of new grains sector agronomists who can work across industry networks to increase growers’ profitability and productivity.
“The three positions that have been created under our partnership with the Victorian Government will provide graduates with a unique learning opportunity and exposure to the grains industry and will in turn enhance the delivery of professional advice to the State’s grain growers. It really is a win-win situation,” Mr Ruchs said
DEDJTR Senior Regional Research Agronomist Dr James Nuttall says each graduate will initially spend time at a DEDJTR regional office before undertaking placements with a leading farming systems group and a commercial farm advisory service.
“The graduates will build their agronomic knowledge and expertise by gaining experience in key focus areas, such as seasonal risk, nutrition and pathology, trial development and management, pest, weed and disease identification and crop protection options, understanding regional farming systems and service delivery approaches,” Dr Nuttall said.
