GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Rohan Mott says the GRDC Grains Research Update at Charlton will be of enormous value to growers throughout the region.

Experts from across Australia will descend on Charlton in March for a grains research forum designed to inform local grain growers’ decision-making for the 2018 cropping season.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting the Charlton Grains Research Update on March 1 when topics such as mice, harvest weed seed control, canola harvest management, local soil moisture levels, pulse crop agronomy and herbicide resistant weeds will be dissected and discussed.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Rohan Mott says the Update will be of enormous value to growers throughout the region.

“To have so many highly respected industry leaders in Charlton for this Update presents a unique opportunity for growers and their advisers to hear about the latest understandings from research that is most relevant to their farming systems,” said Mr Mott, a grower at Turriff.

“With local growers already planning for the coming cropping season, the information to be delivered at the Update will support them with their preparations and provide them with new knowledge to underpin potential practice change on-farm.”

Based in New South Wales, Greg Condon from the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative and Grassroots Agronomy will discuss which harvest weed seed control methods combine for maximum effect within individual farming systems, while Maurie Street from Grain Orana Alliance in NSW will present myth-busting new data relating to canola harvest management.

The likely impact of mice in 2018, learnings from the 2017 season and new research on baiting and potential new actives will be detailed by Canberra-based CSIRO researcher Peter Brown, while Agriculture Victoria’s Dale Boyd will offer some practical take-home messages from local soil moisture probe data.

Pulse management tips ahead of the new growing season will be outlined by Jason Brand from Agriculture Victoria, and options for management of new “problem weeds” and new understandings of herbicide resistance will be the topic of a presentation by the University of Adelaide’s Chris Preston.

Partnered by BCG, the Update will be held at the Charlton Football Clubrooms from 9am to 1pm, with catering provided. For a detailed program and to register for the Update, please visit https://grdc.com.au/events/list or phone ORM on 03 5441 6176 or email admin@orm.com.au.
