Outcomes from research that have the potential to underpin improved farm practices and profitability in the Wimmera and neighbouring cropping regions will be discussed at a forum at Nhill.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a Grains Research Update in Nhill on August 14.

The Update will feature several expert speakers who will deliver the latest research findings which have relevance to and implications for growers in the region.

GRDC Grower Relations Manager – South, Darren Arney, says topics to be addressed at the Update include the use of glyphosate, snail control, stubble management, optimising canola growth and controlling ryegrass.

“The Update at Nhill provides local growers and their advisers with a valuable opportunity to hear from experts who are working at the research coalface, and to gain knowledge and advice that could have a positive impact in the paddock and the bank account,” Mr Arney said.

Andrew Somervaille from Jubilee Consulting will discuss the factors to consider when using different glyphosate formulations and optimal use of adjuvants. He will provide an independent review of “myth-busting” adjuvants, rates, timeliness and the efficacy of glyphosate formulations.

The latest research findings into snail management will be delivered by Michael Richards from Ag Excellence Alliance. Mr Richards will look at problematic crops and baiting strategies to manage current snail issues.

Taking a flexible approach to managing stubbles will be the topic of a presentation by CSIRO’s Tony Swan who will outline pre-harvest stubble management considerations such as stubble load, harvest height, seeding systems, weeds and crop sequences.

South Australian Research and Development Institute researcher Andrew Ware will discuss optimising canola growth through critical agronomy, focusing on time of sowing, water use efficiency, nitrogen requirements by variety and utilising frost management data.

Controlling ryegrass with tactics such as improved chemistry and optimising the efficacy of pre-emergent herbicides will be the subject of a presentation by Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide. Dr Preston will also update growers on emerging herbicide resistance trends.

The Update will be held at the Uniting Church Hall from 9am to 1pm, with catering provided (including lunch).
