Grain growers preparing for the 2019 cropping season will gather in Dunkeld next month to learn of the latest outcomes from grains research and development with the potential to deliver positive impact on-farm.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a regional Grains Research Update at the Dunkeld Community Centre on February 28.
GRDC Grower Relations Manager – South, Courtney Ramsey, says the Update will present the latest research findings, advice and recommendations for informing growers’ tactical decision-making for improved profitability.
“New insights and advice from GRDC investments in research and development relevant to the region’s growers will be delivered by experts from across Australia at the Dunkeld event,” Ms Ramsey says.
“It is critical that our growers and advisers are equipped with cutting-edge knowledge and resources to inform their decisions and guide them through the coming cropping season and beyond, and that is the purpose of Grains Research Updates.”
Among the guest speakers will be Western Australia-based Peter Newman, from the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative, who will compare the impact of different approaches to integrated weed management and the future challenges and opportunities likely to confront growers.
Nick Poole from the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) Australia will discuss outcomes to date from the GRDC’s Hyper Yielding Cereals Project, detailing the performance of varieties over two contrasting seasons and optimum management to achieve high yields.
Corinne Celestina from La Trobe University will disentangle the soil amelioration and plant nutrition effects of subsoil manuring on crop yield, while the regulatory impacts on pesticide and the influence of Europe and Canada on chemical availability and use in Australia will be outlined by GRDC Chemical Regulation Manager, Gordon Cumming.
Providing an update on current cereal foliar disease issues and key learnings from national crown rot and rhizoctonia research investments will be Agriculture Victoria senior plant pathologist Grant Hollaway.
With the theme of ‘boosting profitability – resilient solutions’, the Update will be attended by growers, agronomists, consultants, researchers and other grains industry personnel from throughout the Western District and beyond.
The Update will be from 9am to 1pm, with catering provided. For a detailed program and to register, please visit https://grdc.com.au/events/list or phone ORM on 03 5441 6176 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
