‘Weather essentials’ for effective spray application will be the focus of a series of Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) workshops in South Australia next month.

Growers and advisers are invited to attend the workshops at Jamestown, Roseworthy and Lameroo where topics will cover the operational and meteorological factors that influence the occurrence of spray drift.

Leading the weather essentials workshops – part of a larger suite of a GRDC workshops dealing with spray application – will be one of Australia’s leading meteorologists, Graeme Tepper.

GRDC Grower Relations Manager – South, Darren Arney, says workshop attendees will be presented with expert insight into the day/night cycles of atmospheric stability, wind, temperature and humidity – all of which are factors critical to the efficacy of the chemicals sprayed.

“The workshops will detail the drivers of crop protection efficacy, ranging from total uptake by the target and highly efficient crop protection, through to weather conditions not suitable for chemical application,” Mr Arney says.

Presented by Ag Excellence Alliance, the free-of-charge workshops will provide attendees with greater understanding of:

  • Worldwide circulations and local effects that can lead to long and short-range drift
  • Subtle variations of the paddock environment that determine the success or otherwise of spray application
  • The best conditions to ensure effective chemical transfer from the boomspray to the target
  • Local and distant topographic features that can influence paddock conditions critical to spraying
  • Operational and environmental conditions important to spray operation.

The Jamestown workshop will be on February 19, the Roseworthy is on February 20, and the Lameroo workshop will be on February 21. Each workshop will be from 7.30-11am.

Registration for the workshops, which include breakfast, is essential. For further details and to register, visit www.agex.org.au/events, or phone Kerry Stockman at Ag Excellence Alliance on 0418 841331 or email admin@agex.org.au.
