High rainfall zone cropping research – have your say

Grain growers and advisers in the high rainfall zone (HRZ) of South Australia and Victoria are invited to a series of workshops to help guide new research efforts.
Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) workshops will be held in August at Naracoorte and Maitland in SA and Lake Bolac in Victoria where optimising yields and profits from HRZ cropping will be the focus of discussions.
Feedback and input from growers and advisers will be sought to help inform the direction of new GRDC research investments which aim to reduce the gaps between current and potential yields in the HRZ.
GRDC Grower Relations Manager – South, Randall Wilksch, says the workshops will consider growers’ research and development needs in relation to soils and nutrition, germplasm, disease management and general agronomy.
“We will also be seeking grower and adviser opinion on agriculture technology – including software, hardware and diagnostics – that could potentially have a positive impact on crop management, productivity and profits,” Mr Wilksch said.
Information sourced from the workshops will help to define opportunities, risks and logistical issues that are relevant to increasing crop yields and the profitability of farming systems in the HRZ.
Current GRDC investments in HRZ cropping involve research partners FAR Australia, CSIRO, Agriculture Victoria, and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Western Australia.
Research partner representatives will be at the workshops to ensure their understanding of the constraints and opportunities match the on-ground perceptions of growers and advisers.
Workshops will be held at the following locations:
- Naracoorte – Tuesday, August 6, 9am-12.30pm at Gather on Gordon. In association with MacKillop Farm Management Group
- Maitland – Thursday, August 8, 9am-12.30pm at Central Yorke Cougars Maitland Football Club. In association with independent SA consultants and Yorke Peninsula Alkaline Soils Group
- Lake Bolac – Thursday, 15 August, 9am-12.30pm at Lake Bolac Bush Nursing Centre. In association with Southern Farming Systems.
