Resource can help growers plan for summer spraying

Information about nozzle selection and spray quality is available to help grain growers needing to control summer weeds in coming months.
Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) western regional manager Darren Hughes said the GRDC had developed the Summer Fallow Spraying Fact Sheet in conjunction with Bill Gordon Consulting.
“Often the most important factor in summer weed control is getting the timing right and using a robust rate of product,” Dr Hughes said.
“But delayed control is better than no control at all.
“The fact sheet includes information including application volumes, nozzle types and spray quality required for different herbicides and situations – based on recent trial results.”
Dr Hughes said that with legal pressure on night spraying - due to the presence of surface temperature inversions – South Australian trials tested the control of ‘tough weeds’ in less than favourable conditions during summer daytime spraying.
“One of the best performing treatments was also the one that produces the least drift, provided the application volume (L/ha) suited the product’s mode of action,” he said.
The GRDC Summer Fallow Spraying Fact Sheet is available at www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-FS-SummerFallowSpraying and was included in the September-October edition of the GRDC magazine Ground Cover.
