An on-the-ground ‘brains trust’ – helping to shape priorities for Western Australian grains research, development and extension (RD&E) – has convened for the first time.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation’s (GRDC) five western Regional Cropping Solutions Networks (RCSNs) met recently in Perth.

They were joined by GRDC program managers and staff, GRDC western regional panel members and representatives from research organisations.

GRDC western regional panel chairman Peter Roberts said the RCSNs – established about two years ago and based in WA’s port zones - helped the GRDC’s western regional panel to identify desired practice changes and the barriers to these occurring.

“The RCSNs – comprising growers and industry professionals – also invests limited discretionary GRDC funds into ‘fast-tracked’ projects addressing local crop production issues,” he said.

Mr Roberts said the aim of the recent meeting was to provide input into key GRDC’s investment areas - improving crop yield, protecting the crop and advancing profitable farming systems.
