GRDC spring tour to visit eastern grainbelt

Grain growers in Western Australia’s eastern grainbelt will have the opportunity to discuss their research priorities and production issues with key decision makers in coming weeks.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) western regional panel spring tour will visit districts including Narembeen, Southern Cross, Merredin, Mukinbudin, Bonnie Rock and Koorda from September 22 to 24.
It is one of three separate spring tours being conducted by the western panel in 2014, in order to maximise geographical coverage and contact with growers.
A tour of WA’s southern cropping regions was held from September 8 to 10, and a tour of the State’s northern cropping districts will be held from October 1 to 3.
GRDC western regional panel chairman Peter Roberts said ongoing, direct consultation with growers was vital in order for the GRDC to refine its western research priorities and the spring tours were a particularly important way of achieving this.
“Feedback from growers helps the GRDC western regional panel – comprised of growers and other representatives of WA’s grain industry - ensure that all research hits the paddock and provides the best possible return to growers,” he said.
Mr Roberts said that as well as allowing panellists to hear first-hand about grower production issues, the GRDC western regional panel spring tours provided growers with an opportunity to ask questions about the GRDC and its investments.
“At the conclusion of the three western tours, panel members will come together to discuss their observations, findings and suggested actions,” he said.
Mr Roberts said panellists embarking on the eastern grainbelt tour would take a particularly investigative approach to topical issues such as crop establishment problems on red soil types.
GRDC personnel participating in the southern tour include panellists Peter Roberts, Shauna Stone and John Even, as well as GRDC Regional Cropping Solutions Networks coordinator Julianne Hill and GRDC staff member Tanya Robinson.
