Weed resources can guide management decisions

Information is available to help Western Australian growers manage weeds which are germinating following recent heavy rainfall across much of the grainbelt.

Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) resources can guide growers on pre-harvest herbicide application to control weeds in winter crops, and post-harvest control of summer weeds.

The GRDC Pre-Harvest Herbicide Use Fact Sheet provides information about stewardship for in-crop herbicide use late in the season and product registrations for pre-harvest weed control and desiccation.

It emphasises the importance of adhering to product labels and withholding periods for herbicides, to minimise the risk of maximum residue limits (MRLs) being breached.

The GRDC Summer Fallow Weed Management reference manual demonstrates how growers can reap a high return on investment from managing summer weeds, and includes grower and researcher case studies and research data.

It provides essential information on the value of stored water; the effects of summer weeds on nitrogen; other weed effects on following crops; use of herbicides in the fallow; and effective spray application.

The GRDC Pre-Harvest Herbicide Use Fact Sheet is available as well as the Summer Fallow Weed Management manual

Information about weed control is also available at the GRDC Integrated Weed Management Hub and the WeedSmart website
