Soil acidity and herbicide resistance focus of bus tour

Grain growers from Western Australia’s eastern grainbelt are encouraged to register to take part in a bus tour which will investigate best management practice options for soil acidity and herbicide resistance.

The tour, which will travel to WA’s northern grainbelt from September 12 to 14, has been initiated by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Kwinana East Regional Cropping Solutions Network (RCSN).

WA GRDC RCSN coordinator Julianne Hill said the group had identified input costs and weeds as two of the most significant production issues for eastern grainbelt growers.

“Specifically, lime and herbicides have been pinpointed as inputs that have the greatest impact on local grower profitability,” she said.

“Recognising that Geraldton port zone growers have been pro-active in using strategies to address these issues, the Kwinana East RCSN has instigated this bus trip.”

Ms Hill said the tour would visit growers who had been incorporating lime for managing subsoil acidity or developing methods to manage or prevent herbicide resistance.

“Industry researchers, agronomists and consultants will join the tour at various points to discuss management options and answer questions,” she said.

“Tour participants can then determine how they might apply this knowledge on their own properties.”

Grower properties which will be visited during the tour include those of:

  • Bob Nixon, Kalannie
  • Bill Crabtree, Morawa
  • Mark and John Flannagan, Pindar
  • Rod and Drew Messina, Tenindewa
  • Brady Green, Yuna
  • Peter Horwood, Mingenew

Ms Hill said limited places were available for the tour, which would begin and end in Merredin, and RSVPs were essential.
