Growers invited to have say on industry investment

Julianne HillWestern Australian grain growers are encouraged to have their say on grains industry investment at a series of Regional Cropping Solutions Network (RSCN) meetings starting in July.

RCSN coordinator  said the open RCSN meetings, or local forums, added to the ways in which the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) consulted with WA growers.

"The open meetings further increase consultation with growers on the ground, test the GRDC's issues identification process and help identify local activities and research required in each port zone," she said.

Ms Hill said WA's five RCSNs identified issues critical to ensuring the prosperity of the grains industry in their areas and initiated local projects, while the GRDC Western Regional Panel helped to develop and prioritise the GRDC's research, development and extension investment portfolio at a local, regional and national level.

Growers attending the open RCSN meetings can express their ideas, hear where GRDC investment is occurring, talk with researchers leading local GRDC RCSN projects and speak with GRDC Western Regional Panel members and RCSN representatives. Topical issues will also be discussed at each venue.

The first meeting will be held at the Cunderdin Sport and Recreation Centre on July 17 and presentation topics will include crop nutrition, disease and machinery.

“Craig Scanlan, of the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA), will discuss micronutrient sources and efficiency; interactions between macronutrients and soil pH; the value of fixed nitrogen; nitrogen response in barley; and potassium research,” Ms Hill said.

“Ravjit Khangura, DAFWA, will talk about sclerotinia and the timing of foliar fungicide applications for this season.

“The RCSN-initiated project ‘Machinery replacement options for growers in the Kwinana East port zone’ will be presented by Ben White from the Kondinin Group.”

Ms Hill said a cooked breakfast, barbecue lunch or dinner would be provided for those who registered and attended the events.
