Thumbs up for first WA Farm Business Update
GroundCover™ Issue: 110 | Author: Melissa Williams
The first GRDC Farm Business Update to be staged in Western Australia was hailed an overwhelming success by the eastern wheatbelt growers in attendance.
The Merredin event, held in February, attracted more than 180 growers and agribusiness representatives.
An initiative of the GRDC’s Kwinana East Regional Cropping Solutions Network (RCSN), the Update focused on key priorities of local growers, including improving business skills, understanding profit drivers and employing risk management tactics.
Speakers offered valuable insights into business challenges and opportunities and shared knowledge about how growers could increase their profitability.
Of the growers surveyed after the Update event, the vast majority – many of whom had travelled more than 400 kilometres to attend – said their expectations of this new initiative had been met or exceeded.
Outcomes that growers said they would follow up included: reviewing their business benchmarks; improving communication and business structures; setting long-term goals and priorities; making better capital purchase decisions and focusing on management; and keeping costs low.
