Peas: Grower alert

Field pea growers are urgently advised to test their seed for bacterial blight before committing it to storage to avoid widespread losses in the upcoming growing season. Agricultural advisors are concerned that a large percentage of the pea crop currently being harvested was infected with bacterial blight during the growing season.
A recent emergency workshop sponsored by the GRDC concluded that bacterial blight is likely to seriously affect the next pea crop and the main method of spread will be infected seed. Growers are advised to check with Departments of Agriculture for a seed testing service the cost of which should be around $100.
