Calculator for insect control
A new online calculator is helping northern grain growers and advisers determine control thresholds for insect pests.
Entomologist Dr Melina Miles from the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) says the calculator assists growers to assess the cost-benefits for controlling Helicoverpa moth and sorghum midge.
“Calculating the economics of insect control measures is critical to making decisions about if and when pest populations require treatment,” Dr Miles says.
She says a major advantage of the calculator is that it can be used offline, so growers can use it to make decisions about insect control while in the paddock. However, growers and advisers will need the latest browser versions of Internet Explorer (9+), Chrome, Firefox or Safari to access it offline.
The tool allows growers to enter pest numbers, row spacings, control costs and crop values as part of their calculations.
“The calculator provides an easy way to run a range of likely pest pressure and cost of control scenarios,” Dr Miles says.
Queensland DAFF is developing additional calculators for pod-sucking bugs in summer pulses and Helicoverpa moth in mungbeans.
