Grain Producers Australia (GPA) is appointed by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as the “representative organisation” for the GRDC under the Primary Industries and Energy Research and Development Act 1989. As part of this role, the board of GPA, as well as various grower representative bodies, were invited to attend the regular, six-monthly consult meeting with the GRDC’s board and senior staff.
This meeting offers the opportunity for the GRDC to outline research initiatives being undertaken and for GPA (on behalf of grain growers) to raise issues relevant to R&D and the GRDC’s role.
The mid-year meeting was held in Melbourne to align with the Australian Grains Industry Conference. In addition to the GPA board, the meeting was attended by various grower organisations, including AgForce, GrainGrowers Ltd, Grain Producers South Australia, NSW Farmers, the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, the Victorian Farmers Federation, the WA Grains Group and the WA Farmers Federation.
GPA tabled a list of priority grower issues and questions that were addressed by the GRDC at the meeting.
Some of the key issues discussed were: administrative matters including the length of time taken for contract finalisation; mechanisms the GRDC uses for grower engagement; adequacy of returns for growers on the levy paid, ways to potentially fund industry-good activities, and the governance review.
