And at the University of New England, researchers pitted barley against weeds in trial sowings. Barley lines varied in their competitive strength, but all lines showed some ability to suppress weeds. In earlier work, chemicals isolated from barley have been shown to be active against insect pests and pathogens. Barley varieties appear to vary in their ability to produce these compounds.
