Warrigal resists root rot

Two contrasting reactions to phylophlhora root and stem rot in soybean: the cultivar on the left is susceptible, while the one on the right is immune.

A soybean breeding line from the Queensland Department of Primary Industries has been selected for release as the cultivar Warrigal based on resistance to the two most important races of phytophthora root rot. Because of dry conditions, however, the new cultivar has not yet been widely grown.

Of the commercial cultivars grown in southern NSW and northern Victoria, only one, Stephens, was immune to the two most common races of the disease in those regions. The newly released cultivars Lorna. Murray and Ramsay are susceptible to both races.
