Ozone 1; Methyl bromide nil

Dr Jonathan Banks of CSIRO Entomology has won a prestigious world award for leadership in protecting the earth's ozone layer. He received one of a number of Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection Awards made by the US Environmental Protection Agency to recognise extraordinary achievements in environmental protection.

Methyl bromide is a fumigant identified as a significant cause of ozone depletion. Controls recommended by an international committee chaired by Dr Banks will reduce methyl bromide emissions by 25 per cent by the year 2001 and phase it out completely in developed countries by 2010.

Dr Banks is the former Director of CSIRO Entomology's Stored Grain Research Laboratory which has made significant strides with clean, green storage methods, supported by growers through the GRDC.
