Big barley: the weed strangler

QWRI weeds agronomist Steve Walker told an audience of farm advisers to "remember the potential of crop competition in weed control, barley being seven times more competitive than wheat.

"And barley needs less herbicide: 25 per cent of the rate needed for wheat will give complete wild oat control. That means there is much less selection pressure for the development of resistance."
