Goondiwindi growers heed frost alert

Goondiwindi wheat growers were warned in 1995 of the increased risk of late damaging frosts associated with the consistently negative April-May SOI phase at the time (forecasting the probability of less rain).

Several growers planted later-maturing varieties and chose less frost-prone areas to sow, based on the climate forecast.

Their wheat survived a late savage frost period while other growers in the district lost crops worth $50 million.
