Sloop needs protection

Stick with Sloop, but protect it with fungicides. That's the best current advice for barley growers questioning the variety's ability to cope with leaf diseases.

SA Barley Improvement Program leader Andrew Barr told farmers at a Hart (SA) field day that many of the problems with Sloop were due to the fact that much seed had gone in without the protection of the fungicides Baytan® or Armour®.

"You can protect against powdery mildew for just over $2.50 per hectare more than if you were just treating the seed for smut," Dr Barr said. "To give Sloop away now because of disease problems this year would not be a good idea."

Dr Barr said the fungicide Impact in Furrow® would give up to 18 weeks protection against leaf scald and powdery mildew. An in-crop foliar fungicide spray was also an option if scald was likely to affect a potential high yield.
