Continuous cropping controls

Continuous cropping brings with it increased management complexities and in turn the greater need for crop monitoring to help make informed nutrition decisions. Farmers now have access to a wide range of crop-monitoring tools, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses. They include:

  • accurate paddock records
  • fertiliser test strips
  • 0-10 cm soil fertility test
  • 0-60 cm mineral nitrogen soil test
  • sap nitrate plant test
  • crop inspections for deficiency or toxicity
  • NIR (near infrared spectrometry) plant nitrogen test
  • plant test for nutrition status
  • grain test for nutrition composition.
