Thimble loaves big answers
"To cut the need for extra grain, and so extra work, our team developed special equipment and techniques that allow us to mill very small amounts of grain into flour," said Peter Gras, CSIRO Plant Industry.
"We mix the flour into pinch-sized balls of bread dough and then bake the mini-loaf in a standard-size sewing thimble," he said.
Using the CSIRO method, one wheat head will produce enough dough for several thimble loaves and still leave enough wheat to grow more plants and carry on the breeding work.
