Stop Press: Depth control and yield

A new study shows farmers are missing out on higher yields because of a hit-and-miss approach to sowing crops.

According to a recently released farm equipment report, 97 per cent of broadacre seeding machinery fails to place seed within the recommended vertical band for optimum yield. Optimum yields are obtained by sowing 80 per cent or more of seed between 3cm and 5cm deep.

The study, conducted by the Kondinin Group and sponsored by the GRDC, involved field work on 100 farms. It found a significant number of farmers are either unaware at what depth they are sowing or they are not effectively controlling depth.
