Mallee Sustainable Farming Project

"We are well on the way to developing a farming system of crops in most years, subject to rainfall, with a periodic phase of deep-rooted perennials..."

GRDC investment: $1,100,000 over five years — started 1997.

Environmental challenges: light soils and risk from erosion related to traditional long-fallow farming system; groundwater recharge; concerns over conservation farming and Rhyzoctonia and dry finishes; community concerns about dust storms, risk management in a low-rainfall environment

Solutions: continuous cropping rotations, perennial pastures, fine-tune conservation farming and fallowing methods, match inputs to production goals, improve nutrition and herbicide management, novel cropping approaches.
