Salinity solutions primer
GroundCover™ Issue: 36
Productive Solutions to Dryland Salinity — that’s the tide of a new GRDC publication which profiles more than 30 research projects under way in Australia aimed at combating the effects of dryland salinity and associated waterlogging.
The philosophy behind investments in these projects is to find profitable solutions to dryland salinity because the wide-scale adoption of systems that reduce recharge will occur only if landholders themselves are better off.
In the 40-page booklet there are stories about:
- plant improvements including lucerne and other perennial plant breeding initiatives
- the mapping, measuring and monitoring under way to assist producers and others to better deal with salinity
- eight projects tackling specific salinity-linked issues, and ways in which farming systems are being modified to keep rising watertables at bay and make better use of rain.
