Organic methods in focus

Barren Field

MANAGING weed growth in organic farming systems is the focus of a new project supported by growers and the Federal Government through the GRDC.

In January researchers started setting up two experimental sites, one managed conventionally and one managed by organic methods. The sites are located in southern NSW and north-east Victoria.

On the agenda are the role of spring forage management (green-manuring, silage, grazing, silage and graze) on weed burdens in subsequent wheat crops, as well as the effectiveness of 'within crop' strategies (sowing rate, cultivar, spatial arrangement) on weed growth and crop yield.
