PRECISION FARMING BOOST

THE GRDC has launched its ' National Precision Agriculture Initiative'. Under this initiative the GRDC has sought R&D proposals for projects in which it will invest from July 2002. Precision farming techniques, which include the use of yield maps and machinery that can apply variable amounts of inputs to particular areas in a paddock, are rapidly evolving around the world.

"The primary goals of the initiative are to develop potential methods that will enable growers to recognise, locate and manage landscape variability in order to improve profitability and environmental sustainability," the GRDC says. It anticipates investing $500,000 in the initiative in 2002-2003, potentially increasing to $1 m a year over the remaining four years of the initiative.
