Drought adjustment

WITH SUPPORT from the GRDC, Roya Niknam and David Turner, of the University of WA, have investigated osmotic adjustment in canola, which can help plants maintain growth, despite oncoming drought, to increase yield and oil content. They found cultivars with high osmotic adjustment delivered yields up to 40 per cent higher under drought conditions. In the future canola breeders should be able to select for osmotic adjustment as a guide to drought tolerance and higher performance in lowrainfall zones.
