New breeds of bread wheats that can tolerate low oxygen and high salt levels in waterlogged soils may be on the horizon if tests with sea barley grass species prove successful. Research conducted collaboratively by the University of WA, the WA Department of Agriculture and the University of Adelaide is trialing waterlogging and salt-tolerant sea barley grass as a parent in crosses with bread wheat. Researchers are testing whether the crossspecies hybrid can supply oxygen to the growing root tips and tolerate oxygen in the same way that sea barley species can through the use of a mini-snorkel, made up of internal channels. Growers and the Federal Government are supporting this research through the GRDC.
