Bulking Baudin

Eastern states' growers are being invited to bulk-up seed of new barley variety BaudinPBR logo; on the basis that it will pass its final malting tests. Bred in WA as a replacement for the widely grown GairdnerPBR logo, BaudinPBR logo was recently released to WA growers as a provisional malting variety, according to GRDC supported Barley Industry Development Officer, Denise McLellan. While Victorian trials of BaudinPBR logo will continue in 2003, all going well, seed will be available in the east from licensed seed growers in 2004 with open trading of the seed in 2005, Ms McLellan said. Speaking about BaudinPBR logo, she said, "It is shorter than GairdnerPBR logo and won't lodge as much. It is susceptible to rust but has excellent quality - similar to FranklinPBR logo. Its yield and grain size are still being assessed under Victorian conditions."
