Focus on frost and other pre-harvest losses: risk of frost constrains planting opportunities
GroundCover™ Issue: 45
A MAJOR new program of frost research is scheduled to start in July, GRDC Winter Cereals Improvement Program Manager Ross Gilmour told farmers and researchers at Grains Week.
The program will capitalise on new germplasm and new selection technologies.
Frost at flowering causes yield loss, and the risk offrost constrains planting opportunities because growers attempt to minimise the chance of such losses, Dr Gilmour said.
The GRDC is committed to a research program that will also see pre-harvest sprouting, black point and late-maturity alpha amylase eliminated from Australian wheat varieties within 10 years.
