Fifteen tertiary students keen to pursue careers in agriculture have been named 2017 Horizon Scholars. Horizon Scholarships are an initiative of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), in partnership with the GRDC and other industry groups. The five GRDC-sponsored scholars for 2017 are Matthew Burge and Zac Gallagher of Queensland, Matthew Hyde of Western Australia, Tahlia Noonan of Victoria and Emily Sinderberry of NSW. Each scholar receives a $5000 bursary for each year of their degree, as well as access to professional development workshops and work placement opportunities.

Matthew Burge

University of Southern Queensland  Matthew Burge is studying mechanical engineering. He hopes to design and improve agricultural machinery, and apply precision technologies and robotics to benefit Australian growers.

Zac Gallagher

University of Queensland  Zac Gallagher is studying a Bachelor of Agribusiness and Sustainable Agriculture, majoring in agronomy. He wants to use his studies to solve challenges facing agriculture.

Curtin University  Matthew is working towards an agribusiness degree. He is keen to gain a greater insight into the world of ‘big data’ and the efficiencies it offers, particularly for when he returns to his family’s broadacre farm at Dalwallinu, Western Australia.

University of Melbourne  Armed with a Bachelor of Agriculture and a passion for plant and soil science, Tahlia hopes to work in plant breeding.

Charles Sturt University  Emily is working towards a Bachelor of Agricultural Business Management. She would like to apply the skills she learns through her study in the corporate agricultural sector and one day run her own business.
