Developing new genetic approaches to decreasing the reproductive frost sensitivity of wheat
Title: Developing new genetic approaches to decreasing the reproductive frost sensitivity of wheat
This project aims to identify genes or genetic regions associated with decreased frost sensitivity in wheat varieties and provide markers for breeders to select germplasm with increased frost tolerance. It also aims to demonstrate that targeted modification of key frost tolerance genes can decrease frost sensitivity. The project will ultimately enable breeders to improve frost tolerance in Australian wheat varieties.
The project will utilise multi-layered genome-wide analysis methodologies to identify genes or genetic regions linked to decreased frost sensitivity in a wide range of wheat varieties. By providing markers for breeders to select germplasm with increased frost tolerance and demonstrating the potential for targeted modification of frost tolerance genes, the project will contribute to the development of wheat varieties with improved frost tolerance.
Outcomes:
1. Identification of genes or genetic regions associated with decreased frost sensitivity in wheat varieties.
2. Development of markers to facilitate the selection of germplasm with increased frost tolerance by breeders.
3. Proof of concept that targeted modification of key frost tolerance genes can decrease frost sensitivity.
4. Enablement of wheat breeders to improve frost tolerance in Australian varieties by 2028, with a minimum 1 degree Celsius reduction in sensitivity to frost during flowering.
Please note that this project is part of a larger suite of investments by the Grains Research and Development Corporation aimed at delivering the outcome of improved frost tolerance in Australian wheat varieties.
