Developing metabolite and lipid biomarkers to select for reduced frost sensitivity in wheat
Frost events near flowering significantly reduce wheat yields across the Australian cropping belt. Previous research, with limited germplasm, hinted at specific plant tissue composition-metabolites and lipids-as potential contributors to underlying differences in frost susceptibility. This project will validate the link between metabolite/lipid accumulation and frost susceptibility using a wide spectrum of genetic resources grown in multiple environments nation-wide. A key outcome will be the development of high-throughput selection tools and genetic markers associated to reduced frost susceptibility. If successful, breeders will have access to cutting edge selection methods and parental lines with reduced susceptibility to frost, based on a novel mechanism. Partners in this national effort are CSIRO, DPIRD, UWA, SARDI, CSU, LTU, AGT and AAGI.
