Novel pest suppression in grains and vegetables: preparing the grain and vegetable industries for a future without broad-spectrum insecticides
The Australian Grains and Horticulture Pest Innovation Program (AGHPIP) is a $24.79 million, five-year investment aimed at transforming pest management in Australian grain and vegetable industries. The $10M GRDC investment is led by the University of Melbourne ($5.75M), with contributions from Hort Innovation ($5.59M) and Cesar Australia ($2.25M). The project focuses on reducing reliance on broad-spectrum insecticides and developing innovative, sustainable pest control strategies. AGHPIP has four key research areas:
  1. Endosymbionts in pests: exploring microbial control options.
  2. Boosting beneficial insect populations: enhancing natural enemies for pest suppression.
  3. Proactive resistance management: developing new molecular tools for pesticide resistance detection and mitigation.
  4. Communication and extension: ensuring research is effectively translated into on-farm solutions.
The project integrates cutting-edge research with practical application, equipping growers with effective tools to manage pests while enhancing industry sustainability and resilience.
