Meet the team – John Rochecouste
Date: 17 Apr 2020

What is your name, where did you grow up and where do you live now?
My name is John Rochecouste, although my actual first name is Jean-Francois. I was born into a rather large French family on an island in the Indian Ocean. My parents emigrated to Australia in 1966. My father was a research botanist in the sugar industry and that sparked my interest in agriculture. I grew up in Brisbane, have worked in various places and now live in Toowoomba.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I once wanted to be a doctor, but reality set in and I released there would be loads of hours, studying then working – so instead I became a plant pathologist.
Current description of job with GRDC?
I am the Manager for Soils, Nutrition, Agronomy and Farming Systems – North. I am part of a wider GRDC team which is identifying and evaluating the needs of growers, and then developing and managing research projects to ensure we deliver real outcomes for the industry.
What has been your career path/journey to this role?
I am a University of Sydney graduate. My first job was a ‘baptism of fire’ as a research officer with Agrisearch Services in Toowoomba, running trials to test chemicals. From there I joined the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) plant pathology unit in Brisbane. Later I worked with the agricultural division of Shell, as a commercial manager in North Queensland. It was a lot of fun. When Shell exited the ag sector, I moved back to Toowoomba and after four years living in Townsville, Toowoomba felt like a cold room! In 1996 I started my own research consulting business and then I became the CEO of Conservation Ag Australia (all the no-till groups across the nation) which was an opportunity to meet innovative growers from everywhere. During that time, I also did my master’s degree in business at the University of Southern Queensland, followed by my PhD at the University of Queensland. I was working as a research coordinator with USQ before I joined the GRDC.
What was the worst job you’ve ever done, why was it terrible, and more importantly what did you learn from the experience?
I once cleaned out a cattle dip with a shovel and wheelbarrow. It was a case of learning the hard way never to ask a northern grazier what would convince him to buy my product. I am sure he got a laugh out of it! Importantly though, he did come through with an order and it was a big one. People value how you tackle tasks. If you succeed that’s great, but it’s the effort you put in that is often really recognised.
What do you see as the key/s to being successful in your current position with GRDC?
I now work with an amazing group of people – seriously, no one does it on their own. I don’t know if there is one key to success, but my approach has always been to recognise the value of those around me, don’t sweat the small stuff and appreciate people for who they are. Everyone has something to teach you.
Who do you admire in the grains industry and why?
There are a lot of inspiring people, but two people really stand out for me. Former USQ Professor, Steven Raine, who I worked with for years before he passed away in 2018. He had this amazing capacity to communicate at all levels and enthuse people. The other is Toowoomba-based agronomist Paul McIntosh, who works hard across a huge area, but always, always, finds time to listen and offer support or advice.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Life is fragile. Don’t take it for granted. Treasure what you have. Consider how much our priorities have changed in recent weeks.
How are you getting through COVID19 – any tips?
I am keeping in touch with people and making sure I maintain a sense of humour. My philosophy is people won’t mind you disturbing them in these extraordinary times. Most people want to feel connected. My tip is to make time for others. We are all in this together.
What advice would you give a graduate/student who is keen to join the grains industry.
It’s not just about what you will do in the industry. It’s about the quality people you meet. Even the most difficult of characters have their charm.
