NGN Water quality impacts on herbicide efficacy
The quality of water used in spraying operations is essential for achieving optimal weed control in cropping systems. Reduced herbicide efficacy can significantly contribute to herbicide resistance in weeds and negatively affect profitability if spray applications do not effectively reduce the weed population. Enhancing growers' understanding of water quality test results will enable them to make more informed weed management decisions, which could involve either improving water quality or making appropriate herbicide choices. This issue has been raised by growers at Northern Region NGN forums in 2023 and 2024 and is a matter of concern.

NGN Summer Planter Workshops
The ability of farmers to achieve optimal plant emergence can be significantly affected by improper setup and maintenance of planters and airseeders. Feedback from growers at various field days across Southern QLD has consistently highlighted the need for training in how to appropriately setup and maintain of planters and airseeders. Proper setup and maintenance of planters and airseeders involve several technical aspects, including the calibration of seed meters, adjustment of row units, and ensuring uniform seed depth and spacing. Seed meter calibration is crucial for accurate seed delivery, as it ensures that the correct amount of seed is being planted per hectare. Row unit adjustment is essential for maintaining consistent seed-to-soil contact, which is vital for seed germination. Additionally, uniform seed depth and spacing are critical for achieving even plant stands and maximizing plant vigour. Training in these technical areas would be highly beneficial in ensuring precise seed placement, which is essential for improving seed emergence and enhancing potential plant vigour outcomes. By addressing these setup and maintenance issues, farmers can greatly improve their crop yields and overall productivity.

Coordinator – Soilborne Disease Initiative (SBDI)
The SBDI is a strategic investment aimed at addressing the significant yield losses caused by soilborne pathogens in Australian grains. These diseases impose an annual yield loss of over $1.71 billion across all grains, with $1.23 billion in wheat alone. Current management strategies are limited by genetic resistance, chemical control options, and crop rotation constraints. To ensure a collaborative national effort, the SBDI will be facilitated by a National Co-ordinator. This co-ordinator will facilitate and organise the annual SBDI research forum, provide support and quality assurance for all reporting and communication from programs for the GRDC Initiative Manager, and chair the annual Program Advisory Committee (PAC).

GRDC International Visiting Fellowships Program 2025/26
GRDC International Visiting Fellowships Program (IVFP) is targeted at supporting Australian grains researchers connect with new partners by providing more opportunities for talented young international researchers to engage with talented early/mid-career Australian researchers.This will be achieved by bringing international research talent to Australia on a sabbatical program to bolster grains-focussed national and regional research efforts targeted at predominantly GRDC prioritised pillars. The IVFP will facilitate improved connection of the best early and mid-career researchers in Australia and overseas to ensure enduring global scientific networks that promote the transfer of knowledge and technology for the benefit of the Australian grains industry.Further, the GRDC IVFP would addresses a current gap available for Australian travel awards with the Fulbright program targeting researchers at a more junior level or senior level (Scholar Awards), and other programs targeting established researchers at a more senior level than the proposed GRDC IVFP.
