Launch of mungbean varieties Brolga and Kookaburra – Warwick
The National Mungbean Improvement Program is led by the Queensland DPI out of Hermitage Research Facility, Warwick and is a co-investment between GRDC and DPI. This event is the official launch of two new, rapidly developed, large green shiny mungbean varieties. Brolga and Kookaburra will be available to growers for summer 2025/2026. These large-seeded varieties lead the world in seed size and will result in the growth of new market opportunities.
From initial cross to a release decision in 5 years (2022), DPI is proud to showcase, the adaptation differences of Brolga and Kookaburra, to all involved in the mungbean industry. Attendees will be able to inspect field plots and evaluate the lines against current varieties, inspect grain quality differences and view glasshouse generated, disease reaction differences to bacterial diseases.
The day will conclude with a briefing on the broader breeding efforts of the National Mungbean Improvement Program, targeting superior genetics to build profitable, climate resilient, market driven products.
