NGN Weed control in high standing residue systems in the Northern Ag Region of WA
In the Northern Agricultural Zone (NAR) in WA there are many growers already implementing either disc seeding or stripper front harvest, with a few implementing the complete "strip and disc" system. The heat, sunshine and wind in this zone means that some benefits might be more pronounced than in zones further south. While it is important to understand all of the impacts associated with changing from a "short" retained stubble system to a "taller" system, in the NAR there is a strong emphasis on weed control.
This investment aims to provide grain growers in the NAR with an understanding of the implications of changing harvest systems to implement a tall standing residue system on weed control. This will be done through farm scale demonstrations and extension of results.
