ACRCP Phase 5: Optimising genetic control of wheat rusts through development of RustHapSelect
This project aims to develop and validate transformative breeding tools that allow the levels of durable adult plant rust resistance in elite high-yielding wheat cultivars to be increased much more rapidly than could be achieved using traditional approaches. We will use a big data analysis approach to identify and place values on genetic signatures for durable rust resistance from panels of diverse wheat lines and then design the most efficient strategy to introduce these into high-yielding wheat backgrounds. This will be facilitated by integrating Artificial Intelligence computing, breeding simulation and speed breeding to guide crossing designs for the rapid assembly of resistance haplotypes into adapted germplasm. The adoption of these tools is anticipated to accelerate the release of new varieties with enhanced resistance and reduce the impact of rust disease on grower profitability.
