Diagnostic development and surveillance for biosecurity threats to Australian grains, horticulture, cotton and forestry industries.
This project is multifaceted, with components of all three themes: 'Diagnostic Capacity Building', 'Enhanced Diagnostic Tools' and 'Industry Readiness' and aligned to multiple funding industries. The general aim of this project is to increase preparedness by the optimisation of diagnostic and surveillance resources to maximise the chances of early detection of high priority pathogens and pests and identify emerging threats to the cotton, grains, vegetable and forest industries.
More specifically, the project will:
More specifically, the project will:
- Look for and characterise exotic begomoviruses, their vectors and cotton infecting poleroviruses in high risk areas of Northern Australia and near neighbours
- Develop better and more applicable diagnostic tests for these target viruses
- Work with NSW and Vic to better characterise xanthomonads in Australia, and create specific diagnostics for these as a model group
- Work with NSW and Vic to develop generic molecular assays to discriminate xanthomonad and pseudomonad infections
- Review national forest pest and disease diagnostic capacity
- Develop standard operating procedures for diagnostics of pest and disease samples to ensure a nationally standard and co-ordinated process and review the processes through organised blitz surveys and subsequent sample submissions.
Through the project activities we will:
- Build pathogen and pest diagnostic capacity within current state diagnostic labs. Build confidence at a national level that the diagnostics that are coming back will be done in a timely and accurate manner, and streamline State and National biosecurity reporting.
- Support current high risk site surveillance activities (e.g. forestry and NAQS), increase the chance of early detection of pests and pathogens at points of highest risk and greatest return.
