NGN - Understanding herbicide behaviour workshops
Weeds are one of the largest costs to grain producers. Cost is directly incurred through the implementation of weed control tactics and practices, with opportunity cost occurring via yield loss and/or a delay in maturity due to crop competition and unrealised farming system profit through reduced crop sequence/farming system flexibility as a result of weed constraints.

Most growers now have one or more weeds that are resistant to herbicides. In areas where resistance has developed first amongst post-emergent herbicides, this has placed significantly greater reliance on the use of pre-emergent herbicides. As a result, advisers need extensive knowledge on how these products perform in different soil types and conditions and need to understand their breakdown pathways and factors that affect this, to enable better management to mitigate against the risk of potential crop damage in current and subsequent crops, and to optimise weed kill.
With increasing weed populations becoming resistant to post emergent herbicides and in particular glyphosate, improved understanding of how post emergent herbicides work helps to extract the maximum remaining efficacy from products. To continue to use herbicides in these complex settings it is essential that advisors, consultants and users have a deep understanding of what drives herbicide behaviour. This investment provides a national series of workshops aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge required to effectively use and maintain herbicides.

Pre-emergent residual herbicides are an important weed management tool in Australian cropping systems, as they can be used to control weeds that compete vigorously with growing crops for water and nutrients.

When devising a weed control strategy, pre-emergent herbicides can be a valuable additional tactic to help drive weed numbers down. Used alone they often do not achieve the objective of driving down weed seed bank numbers, but when used amongst a
