NGN: Investigation of seeding system soil throw and pre-emergent options to control blue lupin establishment and growth in narrow-leaf lupin
The Western Australian blue lupin (Lupinus cosentinii) was introduced into Australia for summer sheep feed and soil improvement in the Geraldton, West Midlands, Dandaragan and Gingin districts in the 1900s, and was popular in areas due to its ability to thrive on infertile deep sands. WA blue lupins are now generally regarded as a weed due to several unpopular traits of the species and its ability to persist in the soil and infest other crops. It has become a particular issue and common contaminant in other lupin crops, primarily the widely grown narrow-leaf lupin (NLL), where management is extremely difficult due to the similarity of the species and lack of herbicides.

The University of Western Australia (UWA) conducted an exploratory research trial examining a range of pre-emergent herbicide options in NLL to manage blue lupin. The trial provided some valuable insights into herbicide options and seeding consideration that will be investigated further.

This investment will establish field trials to further validate and investigate seeding system throw and pre-emergent options to control blue lupin establishment and growth in narrow-leaf lupin crops.
