NGN: Demonstrating effective management of matricaria species in the low and medium rainfall zones of WA

Previous research has shown that approximately 50-60% of matricaria seeds germinate within the first 12 months, with the remaining seeds remaining viable for up to four years when buried at depths ranging from 2 cm to 10 cm. The longevity of these seeds suggests that growers need to consider this factor when devising strategies to manage field populations and control the weed seedbank.
Growers and advisors in the eastern wheatbelt have consistently reported concerns about the challenges of effectively managing matricaria within mixed cropping systems. There is a clear demand for information and guidance on improving the successful management of this species.
NGN: Demonstrating effective management of matricaria species in the low and medium rainfall zones of WA
This project aims to provide growers in the eastern and central wheatbelt of Western Australia with knowledge and resources for effective management of matricaria in their farming systems.
Two species of matricaria (Oncosiphon suffruticosum and O. piluliferum) have emerged as troublesome herbaceous weeds in the low and medium rainfall regions of the eastern wheat-belt of Western Australia. These plants produce abundant small seeds, averaging between 3000 to 5000 seeds per plant, and have a partial adaptation for wind dispersal. Consequently, matricaria has spread extensively in the region and is now recognised as a significant weed issue.
