NGN - Investigating impact sowing rate on barley grain quality and WUE in the Geraldton port zone.
Growers in the Morawa district have been looking for options to diversify their cropping rotations to manage weeds, pests and diseases while maintaining profitability. Barely has been considered as one option however quality issues and achieving malt grade have been key barriers, targeting feed grade has been seen as a viable strategy.
A three-year barley plot trial demonstration will be conducted in the Morawa district across two sites with representative soil types, using both prostrate and erect barley varieties. The highest-yielding varieties, selected based on NVT data for the port zone, will be compared against a representative wheat control to evaluate performance and update the economic viability of barley. The trial will include three different sowing rates (low, recommended, and high), with data collected on rainfall, soil moisture, yield, and quality to determine the optimal rate and barley type for the Low Rainfall Zone (LRZ).
By March 2027, growers in the Geraldton port zone will have gained valuable insights through a series of field walks and annual presentations of trial data, enabling them to make informed decisions about including barley in their cropping rotation.
