NGN Demonstrating effective fungicide resistance management strategies for Blackleg in canola of Eyre Peninsula
Blackleg is a devastating disease of canola and is an ongoing threat as the fungal populations continually evolve to overcome genetic resistance and fungicides. This evolution is driven by intensive farm practices, including short crop rotations and increased fungicide use. In 2024, surveillance activities in canola crops on the Eyre Peninsula (EP), South Australia led to the first detection of SDHI fungicide resistance. Although field failure has not yet occurred, it is crucial for growers in this region to be aware of the potential risk. They should be provided with best fungicide resistance management strategies to prevent the further development and spread of this SDHI resistant blackleg population.
At the National Grower Network (NGN) forum in Wangary, EP, attendees highlighted blackleg resistance management as a significant concern for canola production. These growers seek to understand the change in blackleg fungal populations and how these shifts are occurring across the region to make better decisions regarding cultivar selection and blackleg management. This investment will focus on monitoring and recording the development and spread of the SDHI resistant blackleg population. It will also provide canola growers in the EP with essential fungicide resistance management strategies through demonstration trials and extension activities, aiming to slow or prevent the occurrence of field failure.
