National Diagnosticians Biosecurity Blitz Workshop
An Exercise Planning Committee lead by PHA and drawing its membership from industry and government will be formed from the outset of the project. Its role will be to guide and provide input into the development of the exercise, including validation/refinement (if required) of the exercise aim, objectives and delivery. PHA has identified the following high-level aim, objectives, activities and expected outcomes Aim: Improve emergency response outcomes by extending knowledge and understanding of key diagnostic requirements, delivered collaboratively by an integrated system of stakeholders.
Objectives:
- Improve diagnosticians' knowledge of Australia's biosecurity system, including reporting obligations, roles and responsibilities during a response to a plant pest detection.
- Provide training to build capability in industry and government personnel in requirements for sample submission to improve field triage and ability to record appropriate information from samples sent to diagnostic laboratories.
- Enhance cross industry and government networking and collaboration for preparing and responding to Emergency Plant Pests.
Activity:
National Diagnosticians Biosecurity Blitz Workshop A 3-5 day face to face workshop, this activity will provide a practical exercise in sample collection, labelling and submission that supports improved diagnostic outcomes. The blitz will provide the opportunity for collaboration between scientific institutions, government, industry and non-government organisations to interact and network with specialists in various disciplines (mycology, bacteriology, virology and botany), together with local pathologists and agronomists with in depth knowledge of the region and cropping systems.
Expected outcomes:
- Shared understanding between diagnosticians, surveillance personnel, agronomists, growers, etc. of what is required when collecting and submitting samples to a diagnostic laboratory for identification.
- Improved preparedness to collaboratively respond to plant pests that impact multiple industries
