[NBC] Program 4 - In-field high throughput phenotyping of Net Blotch in barley
The most damaging pathogen to barley production in Australia is Net Blotch. Efforts to improve genetic resistance or develop fungicide controls for Net Blotch are critical to a productive future for Australian barley growers. However, successful pre-breeding and breeding programs designed to improve Net Blotch resistance are limited by a method to accurately phenotype the disease in field trials as visual scoring is time-consuming, costly, technically challenging, and can be subjective. The rapid recent improvement in quality, availability, and user-friendliness of both sensor technologies (e.g., RGB cameras) and sensor platforms (e.g., drones) means these now present realistic options for development of high-throughput field phenotyping tools and methods. This investment will deliver a new method for field phenotyping of Net Blotch in barley that is high-throughput, accurate, low-cost, and amenable to use by someone who has minimal pathology training.
